CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

A few days after Tolthos’ trial had ended, Brendamina awoke in the night from a frightening dream. No light from the moon or stars shone through the windowpanes, and the embers of the stove fire had burned out. Brendamina sat up on the cot, looking over at Amorhi’s bed. The other maiden didn’t stir. Wrapping her cloak around her shoulders for extra warmth, Brendamina lay back down, feeling her heart pound loudly in her ears. The lingering images of the dream hung before her like paintings mounted on a wall.

It started in a grassy plain. There were no trees to break up the landscape. Grey clouds hung like heavy woolen garments in a misty blue sky. Brendamina strode through the tall grasses toward a familiar figure. Eloekim turned and greeted her with a smile. Then the pleasant image shattered into a nightmare. Dark creatures surrounded them. The blue sky turned black. Eloekim stretched out his hand and reached for Brendamina. But even as their fingers met, the ground opened beneath her, and she was swallowed up by earth and darkness. The dream didn’t end there. She found that her sight went beyond herself, trapped as she was beneath the earth, into the sky and out across the plain. There she saw Eloekim bravely battling the forces of darkness, but there were too many to fight. Bit by bit the enemy prevailed until Eloekim was cut down. The evil creatures left him to die. Brendamina could see he still lived, but was slowly fading from loss of blood. She couldn’t move, could not go to him, could not call out for help or even speak words of comfort to him in his last fleeting moments of life. The inability to help him felt heavier than the weight of the dirt and stones, and Brendamina was slowly crushed by the feeling of helplessness. Strange men came and stood over Eloekim, laughing at his fate. One man reached into Eloekim’s shirt and pulled out something hanging from a chain. It gleamed like the sun itself, although the sun was hidden. With a wicked grin, the man took the glowing jewel and approached a throne. The banner of Roftlen hung from two posts on either side. The wicked man sat upon the throne, and the world collapsed into total darkness. There the dream ended.

When sleep finally returned, so did the dream. Not once, not twice, but three times did Brendamina awake with the same lingering images of the nightmare. Each time, fear and helplessness grew until it became hard to breathe. Her heart ached from watching Eloekim die again and again. Tears soaked her pillow. At last sunlight tinged the morning sky with lavender hues, and Brendamina dressed with a heavy heart. Amorhi awoke to find her friend on the couch, her legs curled up and her chin on her knees. Brendamina looked worn out and worried.

“What’s wrong?” Amorhi asked, coming over to sit beside her. Brendamina told Amorhi of the dream and begged her to explain the meaning behind it.
